Great sample, terrible bulk
I've been in foreign trade for 12 years. Last year, I helped a client place a $100,000 order.
When the sample arrived, the client immediately replied, "Perfect! Arrange the bulk order right away!"
When the first container arrived, the client opened it, remained silent for 10 minutes, and then sent a bunch of photos: color deviation, blurry printing, the material felt completely wrong, and 3% of the samples had serious scratches…
The client immediately canceled the subsequent $300,000 order and even tagged me in the industry group.
Why was the sample so great, but the bulk order a disaster? I analyzed and summarized the reasons:
Because many factories, in order to win over clients, will make the samples the best they can be,it looks like a breach of trust, yet it’s common practice in such an overcompetitive market.
selecting the best craftsmen, using the best machines, and even creating custom molds.
Then they immediately stop production after the sample is finished, switching to ordinary production lines, ordinary workers, and ordinary materials for the bulk order.
Even worse: you have no idea that their "sample department" and "bulk order department" are two completely different teams.
Later, I did three things and reduced the failure rate from 35% to 4%:
Before sample confirmation, I required the factory to provide "bulk production standard documents" (including machine model, ink batch, and worker schedule).
I made it clear in the contract that "a deviation of more than X% between the bulk order and the sample constitutes a breach of contract, and can be rejected with compensation."
For the first shipment, QC must be arranged for 24-hour follow-up.
Have you ever been scammed?
Was it color deviation, size shrinkage, or damaged packaging?
Tell me, and let's discuss ways to avoid these pitfalls.
